Background of Chevy Trucks, Window Visors and Rain Guards in the Aftermarket Part Industry

 

In 1918, the first Chevy truck was sold, called the “One-Ton Truck,” advertised with the description, “This one-ton warm-drive truck has made a reputation for dependable performance.” 

The Chevrolet Task Force was Chevrolet's successor to the advance design trucks. The Task Force Series ran from late 1955 (second series) through 1959. At GMC locations, it was called the Blue-Chip Series.

The 1955 second series offered standard options and add-ons such as 12-volt electrical systems, the first V8 (the 265 cubic inch), with fleet-side six, seven, and eight-foot length beds.

The 1960 model year introduced a new body style of light pick-up truck that featured many firsts. Most important of these were a drop-center ladder frame, which allowed the cab to sit lower, on an independent front suspension, giving an almost car-like ride in a truck. Also, new for 1960 was a new designation system for trucks made by GM. Gone were the 3100, 3200, and 3600 designations for short 1/2, long 1/2 and 3/4-ton models. Instead, a new scheme assigned a 10, 20, or 30 for 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton models. 

In 1967, Chevy was able to pioneer a whole new truck design. The new Chevy Pickup was transformative in its sleek looks, longer and lower stance. The wide appeal of these trucks was from a group of growing customers who sought a truck that was both comfortable and also able to get the job done, be it for work or personal needs. 

Since 1957, trucks were available from the factory as four-wheel drive, and the new class scheme would make this known. A “C” (conventional) in front of the series number indicates two-wheel rear drive while a “K” denotes four-wheel drive.

Although General Motors introduced its first pickup truck in 1930, the term "Silverado" was a designation used only to detail the trim for the Chevrolet C/K pickup trucks, Suburbans, and Tahoes from 1975 through 1999. GMC used a few variations of the "Sierra" name: “Sierra” and “High Sierra”. However, Chevrolet still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes.

In 1971, Chevy trucks set a record number of car and truck sales, with over 3 million sold. The most purchased was the two wheel drive C/10 pickup: which had more than 1/4 of a million manufactured. In 1976, the “Fleetside” pickup was launched, featuring a small step which was positioned in front of each rear fender to assist collecting items at the front of the truck bed. The truck also featured dealer-added paint striping and aftermarket tires, to provide a customized look for the individual buyers. 

The 1997 C/K with Silverado Trim Package, displayed CHEVROLET on the tailgate.  The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks have been essentially the same for their entire history. There are some trim and option variations as well. Early models included variations in the engine and equipment, but the present differences are slight. The 1999 redesign included different grilles and interior trim, and certain features (e.g. Quadrasteer) were included at different times on the two trucks. Chevrolet did not create a Denali equivalent for the Silverado. However, the GMC Sierra has a Denali model.

The all-new GMT900 generation of the Silverado/Sierra arrived in the last quarter of 2006 as a 2007 model. It features a redesigned exterior, interior, frame, and suspension as well as a power increases on certain engines. It takes styling cues from the 2007 GMT900 SUVs and the Chevrolet Colorado pickups. Like the GMT900 SUVs, these pickups also have greatly improved aerodynamics over their predecessors like steeply raked windshields and tighter panel gaps which improve fuel economy. The GMT800 models were continued through 2007 badged as "Classic", just as the GMT400 models continued for two years after the GMT800's introduction.

On December 13, 2012, the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, along with the related 2014 GMC Sierra were introduced in Detroit, Michigan at the North American International Auto Show. GM dropped the 900 platform and changed to K2XX. The third generation Silverado 1500 has three gas engine options: 4.3 L EcoTec3 V6, 5.3 L EcoTec3 V8, or 6.2 L EcoTec3 V8. 

Chevrolet's MyLink touch-screen multimedia interface system is available on most models. It will have A2DP stereo streaming technologies, Bluetooth hands-free telephone, USB hookups, and an input for an Apple iPod or iPhone. When connected via the USB port, an iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus will be able to stream music from Pandora Radio. A Bose premium audio system, as well as a Bose surround sound audio system is available on most models. OnStar is standard all models.

Underneath, the Silverado rides on a fully boxed high strength steel frame with hydroforming technology; truck cab's frame is built with high strength steel as well. The third generation Silverado uses aluminum on the hood, for the engine block and for the control arms in order to save mass. The truck's bed is made of roll-formed steel instead of stamped steel used by other manufacturers in order to save weight and gain strength. The third generation Silverado introduced the upmarket High Country edition which includes saddle brown leather interior, which is Chevrolet's first entry into the luxury market. A revised front end features styling cues from the 1980s-era Chevrolet C-Series Trucks, and, on Z-71 models, a Z-71 badge was added to the front grille. Production of the current Silverado began on April 29, 2013.

What is a Window Visor and Rain Guard

A window deflector is mounted above the doors of some automobiles, to protect the inside of the car from rain or other precipitation in case of slightly opened windows. Additionally, it may help to prevent precipitation entering the interior in case of an opened door, e.g. dropping from the roof or directly from the air. Deflectors are also fitted to sunroofs to deviate the wind.

It is also known as a "monsoon shield" or a "rain visor" (in countries without monsoon). The primary purpose of window deflectors is to prevent dust, snow, rain, other precipitation or excessive wind from entering the cabin. Also, window deflectors direct air flows over the vehicle, and thus, reduce the wind noise when driving on moderate speeds. Window deflectors can be installed directly in the window channel or attached to the vehicle's body in the sunroof or side window area using 3M automotive-grade adhesive tape. Window deflectors are a common accessory in the automotive aftermarket. Being vehicle-specific, they are normally designed to fit the individual car, truck or SUV models.

 

Types of Window Visors

Currently, 2 types of materials are in use to produce Window Visors and Rain Guards.

The first material is a plastic injection mold. Overview of plastics for Window Visors and Rain Guards. Plastics - acrylic and polycarbonate sheet materials plastics.  Acrylic and polycarbonate sheet materials are widely used for Window Visors and Rain Guards because they come in a wide variety of colors, are easy to form into complex shapes including curvature and finishing.  Acrylic and polycarbonate materials are easy to paint, print, and bond with adhesives and solvent cement.

Material options: Makrolon® polycarbonate sheet and OPTIX® and Plexiglas® acrylic sheet are utilized. Polycarbonate - Polycarbonates have superior impact resistance compared with acrylics and they are often specified when durability during shipping and installation are required. Acrylic - Acrylics generally have superior optical properties compared with polycarbonate materials. Fluted olefins - Plastic sheet materials such as Coroplast® are inexpensive and easy to print.

Pros: Rain Guards and Window Visors are easy and cheap to make and produce with this method. They can be made with many colors and are very light.

Cons: They do not hold up to wear and tear from a physical standpoint and also from a UV standpoint.  You will find that Rain Guards and Window Visors will have color fade over time and become brittle in extreme temperature changes requiring additional purchases over time.

2. The Second Material is Carbon Fiber: Carbon fiber is generally combined with another material creating a composite, to form a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer. This combination is very rigid, and has a very high strength-to-weight ratio. 

 

With these 2 types of materials, there are 2 primary applications for the product.

1. High Strength – Tape on - Vent Window Visors and Rain Guards

1) Pros: Window Visors and Rain Guards are easy to mount over your vehicle's window frames with included automotive-grade 3M tape. Anyone can install and since the Beast Carbon Window Visors and Rain Guards since utilizing Carbon Fiber the life of the product is considerably longer. Frame coverage provides additional shelter for the entire window channel. Beast Carbon Window Visors and Rain Guards have no risk of scratching the glass or interfering with window operation.

2) Cons: The removal process is easy but with plastic RAIN Guards and Window Visors, you tend to have to replace more often.  With Beast Carbon, this is not the case. After removal, the leftover adhesive can leave behind a residue. Beast Carbon provides Carbon Fiber Rain Guards and Window Visors which are as light as plastic and strong as steel.  This means you will not need to replace this product as it will stand up to the tough environments.

2. In-Channel Window Visors and Rain Guards

1) Pros: Easy to install with no adhesive, drilling or tools. Designed to deliver a sleek, low-profile look. Easy to remove or replace – just pop out at any time.

2) Cons: Snug-fit design requires extra force, bending or flexing which may cause damage. After a few years of use, in channel window visors may loosen up, rattle or even fall out. Contact between visor and window may cause light glass scratching or deflector damage.
